Arrived Chat yesterday to hellish hot temps. Hard to believe a week ago I was scraping ice off my windshield in Maine.
Concensus around these parts is that this has been the best year of flying ever. I stopped by Lookout where they told me a tandem thermalled up from release at 2K to 10K the other day, and altitudes of 12K have been reached by solo pilots. More long 100 mile+ xc's than ever before too. Record number of pilots have filled the TC and registration has been closed. Should be an awesome time if we don't melt down in the heat.

Great year to be a soaring pilot, awful year to be a farmer. Eastern Tennessee is in the worst of it: D4 drought, the highest intensity.Flying Lobster wrote:Concensus around these parts is that this has been the best year of flying ever.

It is indeed the worst drought in recorded history here--my lawn is turning into a dust bowl.hang_pilot wrote:Great year to be a soaring pilot, awful year to be a farmer. Our team, the "Romantic Sheep" which included Bruce E and Dan T. came in 4th place in the meet, the two top places going to teams packed with rigids and the other loaded with locals. We did quite well, especially our "C" pilot, though I personally got a bit bored with flying Whitwell every day of the meet. The handicaps enabled me to fly my Falcon and score reasonably high on a couple of days (just for grins), even making the "C" goal on one day. Seeing the expression on the faces of some rigid and topless pilots after coming in on my Falcon was priceless!

KC
Also forgot to mention that Kevin Carter knocked himself out silly giving clinics and tune-ups--the comp was worth the price for that alone and clinics given by others as well.
