Woodstock (Pulpit flyin) Day 1
BOOOOOO WAHHHHHHHH!
In case you didn't catch that, um... yeah, that didn't suck.
Friends everywhere, lift everywhere, fun everywhere.
Blowing strong when me and John Simon got there. The topless crew had just gotten out and beemed up. The rest of us waited around for it to die off a bit and spent the time BSing and generally catching up. Since me and John wouldn't be able to stay for tonight's party, we welcomed the social scene of it all. Lots of good old friends showed up. It was great seeing everyone!
It lulled. We set up. We flew.
Hugging the ridge was not necessary as it was quite boyant and very unstable. There were sink holes to avoid, but the ever abundant lift made that very easy. I was flying a MarkIV and though there was wind, I had no problem penetrating whenever I wanted. John got readings of 15mph or so.
500-800fpm to 6k or so? I stopped climbing around 4.5 as I was freezing my butt off. Others can give you better numbers. I was having too much fun.
We all flew around till the tank was full. Landing was not eventful. Even the goofy times were just some minor pop/dump cycles. Nothing dramatic. I got lucky and had ideal smooth 5mph straight in.
What an outrageously fun day.
Thanks to all that helped out (yes, that especially means you Mike!)
Good times.
Jim

team america at the fly in & the Woodstock Effect
Well the desire to come out and join my teammates finally overtook my Saturday morning slovelyness and reservations about the strong winds.
After a very late start I managed to launch at about 5:00 with the help of Brian and Dave and experience conditions much like those that Jim reported. I boated up and down the ridge in ample lift with just enough thermal and sink activity to keep me alert. Landed in the primary for the first time in recent memory and was the last one out of there just before dark after getting a body ride in the back of a pick up truck with Brian and Kevin C.
One the way up our newest PhD was ruminating on what would have caused the periodic markedly strong and light cycles that we saw too late in the day to be explained by thermal activity. Kevin had also mentioned that he had flown across the valley and hit some really strong rowdy air near the other side. As I was driving out after sundown and just before dark I noticed the lentis lined up like hot dogs on a grill out in front as far as I could see.
I wonder if this doesn't explain it and perhaps the "Woodstock Effect" as well.

Hi everyone, this is Deb.
I wasn't able to make Day 2 of the Pulpit Fly-In, but I took lots of great photos at Woodstock and at The Pulpit yesterday. Click on the link below to go to my Flickr website, where I've uploaded some really fabulous photos.
Enjoy!

Re: Lennies...
We were seeing cycles of 1/2 hour to 1 hour, definitely not rotor induced. It was something larger scale, I think maybe related to the convective cycle. Would be interesting to relate it to the cloud patterns.Danny Brotto wrote:Rotor is as rotor does.

Saturday
Had a great time flying Saturday...after a 9 month haitus. It was rowdy on launch..even around 5:00...but the air above was sweet and easy...Flew to the north point without a vario...hardly turned at all.....The view from there was awesome....wish I had taken some in flight photos....I went out into the valley and headed towards Front Royal. Finally spiralled down, and landed perfectly in a monster field with horses near the town of Waterlick..(13 miles)....After 10 minutes of hitchhiking/walking, two brothers picked me up and took me the back way to launch. I had a few 'Deliverance" flashbacks but they were really cool...So were the 2 beers they gave me. Great night seeing old friends and makeing new ones by the fire at The Pulpit....Fun weekend...

Great weekend for the Fly-In. Felt much more Fall like than the typical Indian Summer we experience around this time of year. I launched about 2:00 and popped up to about 500 over. Decided to do the Strausburg run. Pretty much spent most of the flight between 500 & 1500 over with only 1 turn in a thermal to get up with a little safety factor. Made it down to the point and played around for a bit. Watched two beautiful Bald Eagles soar beneath me for about 15 minutes. Watched Joe Schad head out to land towards Strausburg and decided to join him in the field. Landed at Strausburg High School and was welcomed by Zelda, who brought sandwiches & drinks. Leisurely breakdown and then Joe & Zelda provided a body ride back to launch to get my Jeep. Headed back to retrieve my wing on my way up to the Pulpit.
First XC from Woodstock Launch ... the Batwing went on the road. Great day to fly!
