USHPA are supoorting our good cause
+++I’m happy to announce that USHPA are supporting our event by providing us with promotional goods such as magazines and calendars. USHPA have also given us authorization to print the all-new USHPA logo on T-shirts, which are made by a manufacturer well known for the quality of their products. The ash-colored shirts are made of robust cotton, with the logo on the front and a small arched text reference to the event on the back. They look awesome and are a real steal for $15. On-site availability will be limited, make sure to secure one by pre-registering+++
Volunteers needed
Thanks to everyone who's signed up for a volunteer job so far. However, we need more people to help out, so please see the list below for the most urgent tasks for which we still don't have enough volunteers or no volunteers at all.

+++Important Weather Update+++Important Weather Update+++
+++As of now it appears to be rather strong at the Pulpit on Saturday with a significant temperature drop Friday night and wind speeds of 10 to 15 mph. Given the signifcant number of pre-registered low performance glider pilots this means that we MAY DECIDE TO RELOCATE THE FLYING TO WOODSTOCK ON SATURDAY. The call will be made Friday and posted here on the listserver. We will also try to reach everybody via E-mail. In addition, a hotline will be available at 301-986-8680 starting this Friday evening+++
+++THE PARTY WILL STILL TAKE PLACE AT THE PULPIT, scheduled start is 7 pm+++
+++Directions to WS can be found at http://www.hangglidingspectacular.com/i ... ion.jpg+++
+++We encourage everybody to familiarize themselves with driving directions and the fact that the drive from WS to the Pulpit will take about 2 hours+++

+++As for tomorrow, Saturday 15th, the Pulpit unfortunately looks no longer appropriate for safe soaring flights. Strong winds of a predicted 15 mph and above with a significant North cross will likely keep most pilots on the ground. Woodstock is the obvious choice and things are looking very sweet. NW winds of just around 10 mph will likely make this spectacular site soarable for all pilots. Sunday could turn out really sweet at Bill’s Hill, so keep your fingers crossed for two days of great flying.
The registration desk will open at the Woodstock slot launch at 7 am. The competition will start at 11 am with a welcoming statement by Bacil Dickert and his call of the tasks. We suggest all pilots get an early start to sign up and set up in a relaxed and civil manner+++
+++The party will start at the Pulpit launch at 7 pm. We hope that especially pilots from Maryland and Pennsylvania will be able to make the trip from Woodstock to McConnellsburg and support our many efforts and sacrifices to provide everybody with the possibility of hours of soaring. Please find below directions to Bill’s Hill and Woodstock and see http://www.chgpa.org/HGFest/hgfest.dire ... ulpit.html for directions to the Pulpit+++

+++All pilots who intend to fly WS tomorrow: Please note that we have to make every effort to keep trafffic density in the LZ low and obey speed limits at all times!!! Make no mistake, land owners do not take kindly to mile long convoys blocking driveways and stirring tons of dust up in the air. Please always ask to share rides and treat other people's vehicles as though they were yours+++
Friends and fellow pilots:
I have been flying Woodstock for over 10 years now. Woodstock is famous for exhibiting winds that average about 5 miles per hour less than the forecast for the area up and down the Blue Ridge mountains. This reputation is well earned because it often behaves consistent with it's reputation. That is the reason we are going there tomorrow.
In spite of that reputation Woodstock can be a difficult launch and the Primary LZ can be particularly challenging in precisely the conditions that we are about to experience tomorrow.
Tomorrow you are almost certain to see winds aloft that are significantly greater than the winds indicated through the slot. As a result of this any errors made on the launch will be amplified as soon as you exit the supressing effects of the tree line surrounding the slot. If you have any reservations about launching in strong conditions, I encourage you to wait until late in the day and launch when you are comfortable doing so. You will have much more fun (which is the real reason we particiipate in this sport) and significantly reduce the liklihood that you will experinece difficulties during the initial phases of your flight.
If you should happen to find yourself in a situation where you are uncomfortable with the air, be patient, find a really big field that you are certain you can reach and land there. There are numerous fields both to the North and south of the primary that are much easier to get into than the designated primary. Land in the filed you are comfortable you can hit without undo difficulty.
There is one just south of the "bridge field." There is another two fingers north of the primary lz. There is one with a grass airstrip (among my favorites) near the Edingburg Gap.. There is a huge one out adjacent to hwy 11 next to the "Budget Inn Motel" near the Edinburg GaP, and there are several others that I have seen and never landed in up and down the Woodstock ridgeline.
Your first concern should be to fly safely including your launch and landing. Tomorrow you should have no difficulty in getting up. I encourage you to fly straight out of the slot and to turn only wen you are sure you can do so safely. There is a "bench" in front of the launch that consistently generates lift well away from the trees. There is no reason to try to hug the tree line tomorrow.
If conditions are strong in the air, get in front of the ridge line and pick a field with lots of room for error. There are lots of fields along the Woodstock ridge that meet this criterion. All of us locals would much rather you got down safely than you risked injury by flying a technical approach into a challenging Primary LZ.
Ask us and we will give you the benefit of our experince experience.
