Dr. Science

Post by mcelrah »

Ahem! Let the record reflect that Brian Vant Hull has (successfully?) defended his thesis - and more to the point - has celebrated said defense by late night carousing in downtown DC. He will soon be awarded the well-earned degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Atmospheric Science or Meteorology. From here on, we should all address him as "Doctor-Professor" and make suitable obeisance. He is also available for consultation on health problems and he DOES make house calls. As there has been a call for a club meeting presentation on weather prognostication, perhaps we should invite Herr Doktor-Professor Vant Hull to journey down from Noo Yawk to amend our ignorance at a suitable date. Please join me in sincere congratulations to our sorely missed friend on this important milestone! - Hugh

Mucho Congrats, Brian! Sorry we couldn't celebrate with you. So now are you finally going to be rich and famous? Or at least rich?

Dear Dr. Science,

Dr. Ruth tells me to ask Dear Abbey.
Dear Abbey tells me to ask Dr. Phil.
Dr. Phil says to look for the silver lining, everyone else is suffering from drought.
i feel like i'm being given the cold front by everyone!
whatever shall i do?!

You can't fool me, Brian. I know the real reason you did this was so you could dog those cute little nubile co-eds that will be studying under you!

Nonetheless, congrats on slaving it out--but you must now fulfill the enormous obligation of providing the free-flight community with your forecasts for optimal flying--that is why you went to all the trouble, right?

Has it been that long.

Congratulations Brian. I hadn't realized you'd been at it that long. Now put some of that newfound expertise to work and help us find the thermals would you?

yep. and from here on out everything has to be footnoted and all conclusions either 1) reproducible 2) so long and convoluted as to be unfathonable or 3) so heavily loaded with qualifiers as to be meaningless - you know. . .

Oh, yes, you are obliged to respond: the short comic bits that appeared on certain NPR stations under the rubric "Ask Dr. Science" (Dr. Science: "I have a master's degree..."; Chorus: "i-i-i-in...SCIENCE!") involved answers to science questions that sounded plausible - but were in fact totally and hilariously bogus. So, first question: "how does a hang-glider turn?" - Hugh
P.S. Oh, all right - after the bogus answers, you can set the record straight and give the real explanation - I'm still a little hazy on how the floating cross bar causes more washout on the inside wingtip...
