Manquin Sunday

Post by Matthew »

Arrived at Manquin on Sunday at 3:15 after kayaking with dophins in VA Beach. Ellis was there... plus a couple of students and Manquin regulars. No one was staying up and it was a bit cross from the West and windy. I borrowed the school Eagle and took a couple of flights. Ellis took a flight on the Eagle too. Then everyone left but Karen, Ellis and me. Winds backed off and I got in four flights in my PG and one on Ellis' bag. Winds aloft unexpectedly picked up at the end of the day and I got 1600' on the tow under Ellis' wing. Steve ran out of line only three-quarters of the way down the runway. Karen flew the Falcon 170 three times and Ellis took the last flight of the day on the Falcon-- getting to 1500'. A student, Patrick, showed up late and got in three flight on the Eagle.

Hi, Matthew -
I saw Ellis out there but left before you arrived - we were picking up the trike wing from an inspection and used Steve's hangar to install some new kingpost wires and to wire it up for running lights (!).
I was a bit confused by something Ellis said: do you truck tow your PG or scooter tow it? I was a "test subject" when Sparky was learning from Steve to scooter tow HG and PG, but was unaware that truck towing a PG was a possibility.
Went ahead and bought the fairing for the recumbent so I guess I'm committed... - Hugh

Truck Tow PGs

Post by Matthew »

Hugh,

You can scooter tow and truck tow PGs at Blue Sky if you have a release. Before truck towing, you'll need to scooter tow a few times if you've never towed or you aren't current or proficient at towing a PG.
Ellis and I just did truck towing on Sunday.

"If you have a release" - anything different from an aerotow release? Just attach to lower harness loops? (Guess you wouldn't want one of Tad's uprated weaklinks, huh?) - Hugh
