Pete Schumann tree-extraction clinic 25 April @ Ellis' house

Post by mcelrah »

This is the club's annual safety meeting. Flight Director Tom McGowan has organized a reprise of Pete Schumann's outstanding training on how to get your flying buddy out of a tree without causing injuries. Elis Kim has volunteered her house which has a large tree in the backyard for live demonstration of techniques. We'll also talk about techniques for staying out of the trees... Directions to follow. Watch this space.

Ellis is kindly opening her home for this meeting (thanks Ellis!)

Directions to her place can be found in the Members-Only area of the
CHGPA website: http://www.chgpa.org/Members/members.html

But you do not have to be a CHGPA member to attend and participate,
this meeting is open to ALL who are interested!

If you need directions, or have forgotten the username and password for
accessing the Members-Only area, please give our Prez, Hugh, a call:
703-681-5426 (w) 301-864-3431 (h).

Or send Hugh an email: president@chgpa.org

I've seen Pete's presentation once before and he really does a great
job. Pete used to be into climbing in a big way (think multi-day climbs up
Half Dome). And this time we'll be able to simulate various things thanks
to the trees in Ellis' back yard. You WILL definitely learn something!

Cheers,

A HUGE plug for this seminar...

Something Pete said a few years ago has stuck with me: If I make a choice to participate in an activity in which there's a good possibility that I might find myself up a tree one-day, I should have a way of getting myself safely down that doesn't rely on friends or emergency services. (paraphrased)

As a club, we've been averaging around 1 tree landing a year recently. Your chances of a tree landing on the East Coast are high.

Two questions:
1) Do you fly with a tree extrication kit?
2) Have you practiced descending with gear comparable to what's in your kit?

If the answer to either question is no, you should make every effort to attend this seminar.

Blue Skies,
Daniel

Any suggestions from northern Virginians for alternate routes to avoid the lemming death march on 66? (Don't go down to Ellis' address, just get us to the vicinity.) - Hugh

When you get to my street, look for the pink parachute in the frontyard. Easier to see than the number.

Avoiding I66 going west:

if you come across the 14th street bridge, head for washington boulevard going east, take it through almost all of arlington and turn right on Sycamore. At this point you're less than a mile from my place.

If you come across key bridge, take lee highway (route 29) almost all the way through Arlington until you hit Sycamore. Turn right on Sycamore. (3/4 mile to my house)

If you come across the memorial bridge, take 50 to washington parkway north, take spout run parkway to lee highway, take lee highway to sycamore.

does this help?
and you can call me at 703.536.3209 (home)
