Flytec Day 5

Post by Paul Tjaden »

No time this AM for a detailed report. Normal flying weather returned yesterday and with it, my ability to actually fly a hang glider. I got high in the start circle, managed to avoid other pilots in the huge gaggle near the start circle and went on course with 70 or 80 of by best flying friends. Actually, there were probably only 40 or 50 as some held back for later start times. Basically, I stayed high flew, flew good lines, and climbed well for a change. I was never really low and completed the 86.5 mile multiple dog leg course in the top 15 pilots (I think!). Thought I was going to be in the top 5 but I was about two miles from goal on final glide when 7 or 8 pilots overtook me from above. I had altitude to make goal but only if I kept my speed down around 40 and preserved my altitude but the others were higher and were able to race in above me at 60 plus. Nothing I could do but wave at them. I might have been the top American pilot yesterday but I can't tell yet. There seems to be a problem with my score as this AM I see I was only scored with minimum points for launching (35). Hopefully I can get this fixed when I get to the flight park today. If not...... I'll just have to kill the score keeper :D

P.S. Peter Kane, a fairly new pilot from Richmond who flies a lot at Blue Sky, had a great flight of 50 miles yesterday. Peter is new to XC and this is a huge flight for him.
