Dickie's Friday 30 March

Post by mcelrah »

Ditched work and flew the trike from Front Royal to Sky Bryce (28 miles) and back. After putting the trike to bed, I'm driving out of Front Royal airport at abot 2:30 and there's a paraglider in the air. At first I thought it was a powered parachute, but as I chased it through town, saw that it was indeed a PG with the pilot flying a pod harness. He was soaring the Randolph Macon Academy cupola, but finally landed in the football field. I rushed to greet him - it turned out to be Juanito Ortiz. He had had a fairly long flight, trying various ridge faces in the bowl at Dickie's, finally got up and went 14+ miles to the other side of Front Royal. The campus cop came and asked if we had permission from "the General" to be there. Juanito packed up and we skedaddled. By this time, Tom Ceunen was high and we warned him to land anywhere but Randolph Macon - two in one day would not be welcome, we thought. I took Jaunito back up to launch and he communicated with Laszlo, who was in the LZ. Gorgeous light wind, blue sky day! Sky Bryce is a little paved strip in a crevice across the valley WSW from Woodstock. I located a couple of private strips on the south side of Woodstock - still not absulutely certain I've correctly identified "Karmy" where Bacil often lands... - Hugh

Karmy Airstrip location

Post by XCanytime »

Hugh,
Just go to Mapquest.com, type in Willow Grove, VA, follow Chapman Landing Road off of Rt. 11 towards the mountain, go for the aerial image option, and the airstrip is visible just SW of Chapman Landing Road about halfway between Rt. 11 and the mountain spine. Looks like the airstrip is oriented 2/20. Here's the link to the aerial shot:

Thanks - that's one of the places I was looking at. It's the darker green strip that t-bones into Chapman Landing Road, right? Do you have Mr. Karmy's phone number? I'd like to ask his permission to land there. - Hugh

Karmy airstrip

Hugh,
Yes, that's the one. It tbones Chapman Landing Road. It still should be on the aviation sectional map.

Yeah, it's on the sectional all right. Is there a landmark that's easy to see - big barn or something? If I was bailing on a failed gap-jump, I wouldn't want to have to search for it. Also, do you think Mr. Karmy would welcome a trike dropping in for visit? - Hugh

Karmy Airstrip

Hugh,
The Karmy airstrip is NW of and next to a fenced in horse field. This horse field is just beyond the treeline if you headed out NW of the ridge in between the last two u-bends of the river before the Edinburg Gap. Study the aerial image from Mapquest.com of the area between Willow Grove and the spine of the mountain. The next time we fly Woodstock (Good Friday and this Saturday and maybe even Sunday) go down to that area in between the last two u-bends of the river that butt up against the mountain. Try to spot the airstrip from the air. Look for Mr. Karmy's house and hangar on the SW side of the airstrip. It would help to be at a pretty high altitude to aid you in spotting it more easily.
If Mr. Karmy flies a Cessna 172 in and out of there, I don't see why he wouldn't allow a trike to land and take off from there. But talk to him first before dropping in. He's definitely used to hang gliders landing there. It would be a nice stop on those SSW days of the summer.
