garmin 76 map
is the 76 map still considered @ the best machine for XC hanglider pilots these days?
I have both a 76 Map and a 5030. The map data base on the 76 is excellent, but you need good eye sight to read it from the air. I would still recommend it. Attaching it to the glider takes some thought, but I am sure you will figure it out. My recommendation is to not get anything with a display smaller than the 76.
I hope to see you out soon!

I had the GPSmap 76 for a few years and opted to replace it with the Garmin Etrex Legend CX. The Etrex has a smaller display, but it is a backlit color display that is much brighter and easier to read when flying.
The CX can accept microSD memory, and I was able to get a 1gb chip, bundled with the MapSource topo software. It holds about half of the USA in MapSource Topo data.
Prices have dropped about $100 since I bought mine.

I have a Macbook Pro Intel duocore running OS X--and the 76 interfaces just fine with it. I'm too cheap to spend money on MacGPS; instead I use freeware GPSconnect and FlightTrack. You may also need a serial to USB driver. Functional--but not nearly as well-featured as the competing software in the WinWorld.

Great Googly-moo!
New Garmin 76's
Mark,
Craig bought a new high end 76 a year or so ago. Color display, calculates glide ratios that enable you to determine if you are on a glide that will enable you to reach goal, and other features that I forgot. I'd at least give it a look. I've got a Garmin and old 3080 vario attached to a back plate that I got at Hyland Aerosports. No problem, pretty tidy.
I need to see my Pulpit fly in nemisis back in the air!
Day hi to Sheila for me.

Garmin 76CSx Virtues
Mark,
Yes the 76 is a fine GPS. The latest model above has a color display and heaps of memory for maps. Furthermore, it can store hours of detailed track data. The USB cable means that the maps can be quickly uploaded and the tracklogs quickly downloaded.
That said, they're friggin' expensive. Think carefully before buying one.
Let's fly over your house together this spring,
Pete

thanks so much for the responses.......
I must admit that I have always been hesitant to participate in the techno industrial cyber infotainment complex, but it does have it's uses.
I must also reveal that I have always felt very honored to be counted as one of you. ( a whack assed hang bum) and miss all of you nuts since I have started a family with our most beloved sheila.
I am hopeful that I will be successful in expanding my flying activities this year, and may use this forum to contact other circle jerks to that end.
But don't crap your pants if I don't respond in a timely fashoin, or at all, 'cause as you know, I'm dealin' with a stacked deck.
your bud,
gardner

Here's a website with 76-Map CX price comparisons:

And ditto for the 76-Map CSX:

Anyone got an opinion on the CX vs the CSX ?
