Re: Dickey's Friday May 2

Tom, Jim, and I arrived at 4 pm. By the time we set up, a big cloud settled in above us and everything shut down. Waited an hour for a gap to show up in the cloud. Tom launched first, and beamed up. I launched next, found a thermal over the lookout on the right, and went after Tom. Flew for less tha...

Re: Lessons from a Lucky Wind Dummy - Edith's 12/28

Danny, I have not done the math, so speak from experience. In the performance of my paraglider a difference of 1 kg in my total weight is fairly noticeable, especially when flying into strong wind. At an extreme, a difference of 5 kg makes me feel that I fly an entirely different glider, and need to...

Re: Daniels Incident 12/4/13

Well, there was a local pilot there. I arrived after the other pilot was already at the site. When we exchanged text messages earlier on the phone, he indicated that he was ahead of me by half an hour and would most likely be in the air or just land when I arrive there. This created the impression t...

Re: Woodstock Sunday

Hey, I am in! Just need an HG pilot to report from launch that conditions are great, eminently PG-able, and then I go. Don't worry, I will not hold it against you if the winds are howling 20-30 mph by the time I get there. Standard procedure.

Great design, Tom. I vote for no. 1. Please someone register my vote if I don't make it to the Xmas party. [I know, I have not seen the competing entries, but others would be just wasting their time...]

Re: Weekend 8/10-11

Yes, on my second flight I went over the back with only 1200 over launch. Maintained for a while, but then sunk out and landed at the school. The reason I am posting this is that I was given a ride back to launch by a nice fellow named Art Bert (spelling?), a former HG and PG pilot, and member of CH...

Yes, Dan deserves credit for kicking this process off a while ago.

Regarding directions, I wonder whether coming from I-81 through the Edinburgh gap is faster than going via Luray.

Alex, Pity that you could not join us Saturday. Would be great to fly (but not climb) with you Hogback again. And Wednesday the forecast looks NE. Unfortunately the site is closed till July 15 for falcon restoration. If the forecast turns E then perhaps we can try Bill's hill Wednesday afternoon. La...

Re: Daniels 4/9-Today

When I got my car and drove down to pick up my gear around 8 pm, Hugh pointed to a bull at the LZ where we landed 45 minutes ago (the primary). Indeed, there was a big black cow-like creature standing about 20 yards from the gate, with some notable differences compared to the standard look of a cow....

Felix,

Congratulations for the new glider, and many thanks for your help to sort out my lines after a gust flipped the glider upside down. You made it possible for me to join Knut above the ridge, and enjoy the sunset from the air.

Re-posting from the DMV-PG list (because of potential educational value): I had three flight, almost five hours in total. Best elevation 2500 over launch. First flight was the most exciting -- I launched my new glider (Artik3) with a 360 degree riser twist (on the right side). My set up sequence was...

And I simply can't stand it, what a fantastic night. Camping at launch and I'll decide if I give a flying F about work tomorrow when I see the day's forecast. In the meantime... beer and potato chips! :-) Mark, Many thanks for the launch conditions report yesterday evening, and good luck for today!...

Re: Paragliding Friday?

I have flown Flattop many times, and have also seen Jim (McClave) launch and land elsewhere. I am pretty sure he can handle Flattop (when the conditions are right, ie., E wind, 8-12 mph at launch level).

Mark, I am very sorry to hear this. We truly appreciate the help you and Ashley provided extracting Krista's wing from the tree at the LZ. There was no sign of things "going south" when we watched Ashley to launch and then left at about 1:30. I hope he did not get into any trouble. You hav...

Ellis and I got there at about 12:30. Conditions were very light at launch. We both had what I call "between a sled and an extendo". Hugh arrived, launched, and had the same. Ellis decided to walk the dogs. The wind became a bit more defined ("gusting" up to 5 mph at launch), and...

Re: 1) mend up Laszlo! 2) jeez, some of you were almost nextdoor

Hugh, The wing must be fine -- the folks at Superfly replaced a small cell that was ripped, and also did a line check (the latter had nothing to do with the accident -- after two years, it made sense to get it done). Hope to test how the wing flies at the coming weekend. Just don't expect me to do a...

John, Nice to hear from you. Life must be interesting in newly independent Kosovo, and its great to see that there is flying, too, in the youngest of all countries. Thanks for your well-wishes. Monday was the day to be at the Pulpit. Paul, Tamas and I arrived at 1:30 pm. Tamas launched in light winds first under cloud cover and had a sled.
