Re: Paraglider stuck in trees near Woodstock
As promised the incident report which I have filed with more specific details at USHPA as well. Pilot involved was a novice P2 that had flown Daniels and Edith's Gap but not yet Woodstock. I encouraged the pilot to write the incident report which he promptly did (see below, I made only a few minor c...

Re: Paraglider stuck in trees near Woodstock
A more detailed incident report will follow and of course reported to USHPA. I have discussed the reason(s) for the incident with the pilot in question.
As reported already the pilot is unharmed and his glider only had one broken line.

Re: Club donation to USHPA
Charlie, that is fantastic!! It is wonderful that members that are able to step actually really are stepping up! AS you said though this is not the end of the story and free flight in the US needs to tackle a few other issues as I have previously mentioned. Nonetheless, it is very uplifting to read ...

Re: Club donation to USHPA
Yes agreeing with most of what already has been said above and I am still not sure what to think about this mess... certainly I am conflicted about the American judicial system (both positive and negative) and the consequent insurance mess (mostly negative). A good topic for another thread somewhere...

Re: Seeking PG instructor
Hi Rick, thank you for your note and we look forward flying with you. In the DC area there will be two instructors next year that can help you out certainly during the summer. Shoot me an email at pvanoevelen@gmail.com and I can fill you in with more details about the various options. Cheers Peter

Re: Edith's Sunday
Mark C, Great write up and interesting to read how the EG LZ is interpreted for HG's. Having flown there now several times under varying conditions the LZ is even for PG's at times tricky as it gets very thermic and winds can shift 180 degrees. Even for PG's if you are not certain set up at the down...

Re: Observer Meeting
First off picking one sentence out of context does lead to wrong conclusions. Secondly: Semantics do matter. In particular when it comes to liability. I would not be so picky with words if I was in Europe but in the US unfortunately one has to be. If you have someone under instruction you better mak...

Re: Observer Meeting
We have requested observers and that was denied. I think the current proposal is a continuation of our actual system and makes sure we have enough experienced and capable fellow pilots available to help our new pilots fly safely. Regarding some previous made comments: New P2s, yes those you do obser...

Re: Observer Meeting
If it can be held before April 23rd that would be great (and not on April 16 either please :D ). I do not think that the site ratings in itself will be subject to too much change only the addition of "plus observer" needs rewording. That said it is good to review and assess the various sit...

Re: CHGPA Spring meeting motions
Good summary Mark! 5K for switching a site to CMS is a good deal in principle. I am having one web sites converted to a CMS and another newly built which cost us more than 5K (significantly) and we are still going for the more affordable companies. Of course a good deal means that there will not be ...

Re: CHGPA Board meeting agenda request
I still am with Matt/Jeff that I like our current practice improved. We do not need official USHPA observers as mentors/sponsors. Using observer for that tasks works but not strictly according USHPA regulations. Somewhere we need to align the -official- protocols with our current practice. It might ...

Re: CHGPA Board meeting agenda request
Regarding meeting I am all for it and the We or Th before the Spring meeting sounds good to me. I would like to have both HG and PG there as there are some significant differences and that is not entirely reflected in the old site guide and certainly not in the new one under development. I am still ...

Re: CHGPA Board meeting agenda request
I think I got misread here completely. There is a big difference between site ratings and flyable days (or times). On strong gusty days even kiting on a beach can be very dangerous. So we need to seperate the discussion between: 1) is a site flyable by a P2 and 2) are the conditions (weather in part...

Re: CHGPA Board meeting agenda request
Essential type missing NOT:
P2's are supposed to learn from others when and where not to fly. Observers like any other -more experienced- fellow pilot can help in that process. It should NOT take away the responsibility from the P2's.
Sorry about that, Peter

Re: CHGPA Board meeting agenda request
I like David's response that highlights there are several issues at stake here and not all of them are directly relevant to Dan's proposition but do deal with how USHPA sees what an observer is. Below my perspective from the view of a PG observer. Regarding site ratings (independently of outsiders r...

Re: USHPA Spring Meeting (notice from Region 9 Director)
Hi Danny, We have a few additional volunteers but also folks who thank for the honour as they find the way CHGPA and USHPA are dealing with the revocations/appointments not acceptable. As a current observer I find it also rather hard to swallow how this is being handled and certainly is not helping ...

Re: CHGPA Board meeting agenda request
Again, Matthew I disagree. Since Ben sent out out the list this week I have checked it :D. At this point we are missing two of our most flying observers (for PG). With the new observers coming aboard (not yet in that list) that is in part remedied. I personally get contacted regularly directly and e...

Re: CHGPA Board meeting agenda request
Hi Danny, I disagree maybe on paper there are enough observers but not in practice. We have had now several occasions where no observers were available (and yes having two less at the moment certainly directly affects this). Most of us travel quite a bit and have demanding jobs which makes the avail...

Re: CHGPA Board meeting agenda request
Dan, I do support your proposition but with the caveat that for those (P2 and P3s) who are unfamiliar with or new to the site a site introduction is required (and we need to address protocol for that, what to do when it gets ignored for example!!). This is as much about safety as it is about site pr...
