BIRD'S-EYE VIEW IMPROVES AS HANG GLIDERS EXTEND THEIR RANGE By ANGUS PHILLIPS April 30, 1989 MCCONNELLSBURG, PA. -- In the hang-gliding pecking order, you can't get any higher than Jerry Nielsen's Hang-Five rating, which certifies him as a master at jumping off mountains and soaring around on gossam...

Re: Jerry Nielsen died
Many of you don't know Jerry but he was a great pilot and a great friend. I will never forget the phone call I received in the 80s when Jerry decided to become the Capital Clubs President. He asked me to to be the Flight Chairman it took some convincing but I knew that anything Jerry did would be 1s...

Re: Weekend 6/18 - 6/19 flying

You are basically gambling with your chance to get out of the slot cleanly and if you navigate the slot flying the ridge can and in most cases will be very turbulent ...

Everything right now is pointing towards one of those classic evening glass offs. Im planning to arrive betw...

Re: Ward's Service
I was thinking about this a lot last night and I remember Ward and I and Jerry Nelson and Paul McDermott joking when we were in our 20's that we would still be hobbling off the High Rock ramp when we were in our 70's.. The service reminded me very much of the First and Last scene in "Chariots o...

I first met Ward in 1978 we both had new gliders, I just acquired an Eipper Flexi 3 and Ward just purchased a new Se...

If Im not mistaken Woodstock faces about 305-308 degrees.. Wind forecast is for 341 degrees at 1pm..thats more than 30 degrees cross. Not saying it couldn't be soarable.. it's possible, but the turbulence you would encounter from the bowl ridges can be sever. One of the most turbulent flights Ive ev...
