Leaving the area, wishing everyone the best

So this is farewell for now to all of my CHGPA and MHGA hang gliding and paragliding friends. My family and I are relocating to Tallahassee, Fl where I will join the faculty of the School of Business at Florida State University as an assistant professor of real estate. Now onto the important part: T...

Re: Hi! New around here, seeking advice

Here are my non-authoritative responses to your questions: How long does the P1 and P2 classes usually take? That varies tremendously depending on conditions during your lessons, your aptitude, and time that elapses between lessons. Is there a way my previous experience with paragliding in France co...

Re: Hi! New around here, seeking advice

Hi, Tom -- The instructor in Pennsylvania that Dan mentioned in the previous post is Terry Bono: http://www.pennsylvaniaparagliding.com/Pennsylvania_Paragliding/Paragliding_Lessons.html You may have to travel to get the P2 (Novice) rating. Once you have that, we have some good flying sites here and ...

Re: Woodstock tomorrow the 28th

Hi, Chris --

We met a few times a few years back. If I remember correctly you left the area for language training at Monterery. Did you do any flying there? Are you back in the DC area for a while? Nice "seeing" you back in the forum. Hope to see you on a mountainside soon.

Re: Observer Meeting

Here’s my reaction to this change: It is certainly within the purview of local clubs to regulate local flying sites. Some club-sites require official USHPA observers -- this is the model CHGPA/MHGA have previously utilized for the sites they regulate -- while others require club-designated “sponsors...

Sunday, 3/9

I'm heading to Smithsburg tomorrow. If my energy and the conditions last, I might head up to High Rock for a late afternoon flight -- assuming there are any pilots around. If anyone feels the need to freshen up their launching, landing, or kiting skills, come join me. Likely, we have about a month l...

Re: Hogback Violations!

The primary purpose of CHGPA is to secure access to flying sites. Each member of the executive board knows this is job-one. If it was in their collective wisdom best for the club to handle the Hogback situation through board-level proceedings and not to hash out a course of action in public forums, ...

I'm watching conditions. Will make a game-time call in the morning after conspiring with Matthew and Karen -- my wing lives a few blocks from them and I enjoy carpooling when plans allow.

One hell of a return to mountain flying! August of 2011 I didn't walk away from Woodstock. Here's a pic from Chuck's last flight at Woodstock: http://chgpa.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5025&p=27277#p27277 This weekend, my first mountain flight back ... Woodstock! Congratulations, Chuck! W...

Re: Fri (10/25/2013) @ Woodstock

Fantastic conditions at Woodstock (for HG)! Had 700' over in consistent ridge lift all day and strong thermals for when you wanted to get really cold. I launched second in the afternoon wave, just after Ward at 2pm and flew for exactly two hours landing because of cold fingers. Ran the ridge from th...

Re: Fri (10/25/2013) @ Woodstock

Conditions look decent for late October: 400 - 600 fpm, top of usable lift 4500 - 5500. A ridge run might be reasonably doable, if not foliage should be approaching peak for good sight seeing. I'm in, too. ETA ~ noon.

All- When you call, let them know we will be flying the "Summit Road site". Bill's Hill is our name for the site (the same rangers manage Fisher Road, so there's actually room for confusion). Jon- Thanks so much for keeping up good relations with the rangers! I used to call once or twice a...

Hi, Felix (anyone else) -

I know its not as convenient for you, but I'm looking for company on a midweek training day at Taylor Farm. We should get some SW next week, will be hot as balls, but safer for double surface gliders than OR. Let me know if you're interested.

Re: Pulpit Saturday 6/15

As Bacil said, I flew 28 miles from the Pulpit to High Rock on Saturday, my first time to complete that classic MidAtlantic XC. I saw lots of beautiful cummies on my drive up from DC in the morning, but by the time we flew the sky was blue with a fairly thick cirrus layer. The only time I got high w...
