Re: Bills Sunday 9/6

its almost 7pm and laszlo landed after 5h flying and at least 3 toplandings. He knows the ridge now better then everybody else! It got pretty magic and conditions were very good all day long. I lauched at 12:30pm and with a still low base left the area. Max 4500ftasl well in the cloud. I landed wes...

Hammer Conditions in Switzerland

Hammer conditions in Switzerland. The last couple of days offered excellent weather conditions for big distance XC flights. So yesterday I took a day off from work and went hunting miles. It paid off very well - I could complete a 224km = 140mi FAI triangle in just 9 hours 15 minutes. That's a perso...

Re: Ski/Fly Boowah day

Hi Spark! Congratulations, that sounds & looks very cool, and is familiar to me! There is a special form of Triathlon I like to do, and which (at around this time of the year) can be carried out very well at a site not too far from where I live First thing in the morning is to take a small gondo...

@ Spark: Nice to hear from you! Though I was thinking about it, I haven't bought a speedriding kit at the end of last winter. Don't really know yet whether I will do it for the coming winter. Let's see... I have been flying both Sunday and yesterday! On Sunday, we climbed Piz Segnas and Piz Sardona,...

Hello Everybody

Almost half a year since my last post here - maybe most of you hardly remember me, since it's also > 1.5 years since I moved out of the area, i.e. back to Switzerland. I have flown very little this past summer, focusing on days with good XC potential. Well, the weather wasn't as great as last year f...

First XC of the year

You're always welcome, Spark! Though after easter, most ski resort shut down their lifts, so the speedriding season is over. Well, that's ok given the fact that the season for regular flying has definitely started. Just yesterday I went XC flying for the first time after a long break. It resulted in...

Speedriding!!!

Yeeehaaa!!! Yesterday I went speedriding for the first time. You don't know what this is? Well, this is a mixture between paragliding, parachuting and skiing. You do it with skis on your feet, since the canopies that are used are not suitable for footlaunch. The wings are a mixture between a paragli...

Just kidding (or maybe I'm not?). Anyway, I'm happy for you that you get such good flying.

Article

So the article did finally appear!?! I had almost forgotten about it. I'm no longer a USHPA member, so I won't get a magazine. Can somebody send me a scan (a hardcopy would be even better) so that I can see the layout? If so, ask for the address with a PM. Cheers, Marcel PS: Charlie, Hugh, you are h...

Speed Flying

Speed Flying: That's the big new trend here! Check out the videos on http://www.acro-base.com/fr/galerie/video/video.htm, especially the one on top (EIGER camera embarquee). What is it about: two guys are riding/flying down from Eiger. Their wings have a size of 8 square meters (about a third of a P...

Paragliding at 13500ft!!!

Last Sunday, 10/08/2006 my friend Adrian and I climbed the Jungfrau (4158m/13642ft) in the Bernese Oberland, carrying our paragliders in the backpack. We then managed to launch from just below the summit. With that, another dream came true. The climb is very serious mountaineering and involves rock ...

Re: Speedbar and Brake

As to speedbar and brake, show me some evidence of why this is dangerous. I had written it above: the airfoil produces most of the lift near the leading edge. Applying brake whilst on bar makes the air foil produce more lift in the back section, which causes - less pressure on the leading edge -> l...

Re: Speedbar and Brake

I'm following up on that. To the question whether standing upright in your harness increases your forward speed. The answer is no. For an explication, if you want it short, read this quote of Adrian Thomas. He's an aerodynamicist in academia and also works for Airwave: Experimentally if I go from my...

Even a little brake is too much while on bar. I don't know what Mickey does. But just because he does "it", it doesn't mean it's safe. Talk to any PG designer, or go and read other forums, it has been discussed many times. As to flying "effectively" in strong winds with speed bar...

Sorry Matthew, but touching the brakes while on bar is a big (very big!) no-no. Much bigger risk of suffering a collapse because if you apply brake, more lift is produced in the rear part of the wing. The angle of attack is low anyways while on bar, applying brake takes pressure from the leading edg...

Hike & Fly

As the XC season in Switzerland is getting towards the end for this year, it's time to experience new adventures. In particular, hike&fly. I just got a lightweight harness. It's really only a bit of webbing and a thin layer of cloth. It weighs less than 1 pound. But still, it's comfortable enoug...

Nice XC flight in the Jura

Most joyful things once come to an end, and so I guess I had my last XC flight before I restart to work this coming Friday. Unfortunately, the weather in August has been fairly poor (maybe to compensate for the glorious June and July), but last Wednesday we had a ridge of high pressure. There was a ...

Pod Harness

Hi Marc, The biggest plus of a harness with leg fairing is IMHO that you are comfortably warm. Although it's "only" the legs, it makes a very big difference. On XC flights in cold temperatures, it can make the difference between wishing to continue and wishing to land. Second biggest advan...

Flight Tales from Switzerland

I'm glad that the forum is back online, but it's a bit of a bummer that all my previous pics and stories are gone (no backups on my side neither...) Time to start a new thread. In the pic below, that's me thermalling at around 14000ft on a long XC flight in the Wallis. Behind are the glaciers ...
