East Coast Championship - 2019
There has been a lot of interest in reviving the East Coast Championship hang gliding competition and some recent developments make that a possibility...although it's not a certainty for 2019. I have started the planning and the paperwork to have the competition sanctioned by USHPA and CIVL so that ...

Blue Sky AT on 6.18.18
We had a great day of aerotowing yesterday at Bluesky. The morning skies were not looking encouraging but it was the first day this year that aerotowing was available so everyone just went with it. There were five of us in all. Peter Kane (max altitude at 4,500 by climbing the side of a cloud), John...

Re: Accident with Nene Rotor
I'm glad he is ok. As John said, he's a nice guy that went well out of his way to help other pilots. Nene showed off some of his harnesses at the Midwest last summer. He does some beautiful work and is evidently a perfectionist. Seems like he has a fair amount of grit and is cool AF to be able to pl...

USHPA = Upcoming meeting
Hey Everyone, This is Dan Lukaszewicz, one of your Directors for Region 9. I recently agreed to work on USHPA-FAA relations. I will be heading to a USHPA board meeting and was wondering if you had any issues on your mind. A lot of our recent discussions at USHPA have been focused on increasing and p...

Walt, Consider squeezing in some sport class comps if time allows. Green Swamp and Quest are always fun and the logistics are easy since there is camping at the field. Green Swamp has a coaching/teaching aspect to it. Big Spring is big in every sense of the word. Big Air, big altitude, big distance ...

New Class E Airspace Proposed for WV and PA
Looks like some new airspace is being proposed for our area. It shouldn't be a problem since it's Class E. Let me know if you have any concerns. Federal Aviation Administration 14 CFR Part 71 [Docket No. FAA–2014–0839; Airspace Docket No. 14–AEA–7] Proposed Amendment of Class E Airspace, Selinsgrove...

Re: Pulpit 6/24 - 6/25
It was a great day to fly even if the conditions weren't perfect. I had a few firsts for the day; probably things that the regular mountain pilots take for granted. The wind was a fairly constant 15mph with higher gusts when I launched. It was the first launch that I have ever done where a wire crew...

Re: Learning from a HG accident
My first thoughts are for the speedy recovery of the pilot. I have been in his position and know it was hard to forgive myself and get past the accident. To those of you who know him best, please convey that he is part of our flying family and that we will not turn our backs on him. When he feels up...

Goal Post Rack for 2" Receiver
I have a goal post rack that is designed to fit a 2" receiver. It is height adjustable with a series of locating pins and works very well. I used it on my FJ Cruiser and my new car cannot accept a front receiver.
Let me know if you can use it. It's free to a good home.

Re: Observer Rating
Sorry for the confusion everyone, There was a bit of a glitch and most of the Observers in our area were removed from the USHPA system. A couple of folks have contacted me about their appointments. USHPA is pushing the concept of mentors performing tasks like giving launch advice to new pilots. I'm ...

Re: USHPA election results
Thank you everyone. I definitely have some studying to do regarding USHPA and the SOPs and bylaws. Free flying is such a rewarding experience. I've had such a good time and have met the best people flying. It seems like it should be a lot more popular than it currently is.

Wing Transport from Blue Sky to Wallaby
My U2 is currently stored at Blue Sky. I'm planning to do some winter flying at Wallaby. If anyone is headed south and has room on their roof for another wing I would be grateful, and of course I am willing to help with gas money.
Let me know if you can help,

Re: Running an Aerotow Club - By the numbers
Danny, Is there any chance that M-ASA would be willing to expand to tow hanggliders as well? If there is sufficient land and pilots that are willing to learn to fly dragonflies it may be a mutually beneficial relationship. I bet some pilots on both sides might be interested in cross training. Just a...

Running an Aerotow Club - By the numbers
I miss Highland Aerosports so I ran the business case for an aerotow flight park and the numbers didn’t produce a living wage in my simplified analysis. In fact the analysis revealed that the “owner” would have to do a lot of work for very little income. In fact, the venture is considerably more pro...

USHPA Regional Director
I'm throwing my hat in the ring for USHPA Region 9 director. I would like to represent the concerns of the CHGPA and of the Blue Sky pilots (where I learned to fly). About me: My name is Dan Lukaszewicz. I'm an engineer working in northern Virginia and live in Alexandria. I've been flying for 10 yea...
