Re: Kevin Carter, RIP
Fred flew towards McConnellsburg, almost made it over the front ridge, but had to bail to the SE side of the ridge. It was an L&V day with bases at 8,000 ft. It was a great and notable flight. Subsequently, the MHGA, Mark Fink, and me (personally) each put up a $100 (total $300) prize for the fi...

There's a P-40 Expanded TFR up... adjust downwind dashes accordingly.

Re: Smithsburg 2morrow (Saturday Dec 17)?
I had planned to fly my sailplane on Sunday but didn't rig it because I didn't like the forecast (call for overcast and the wind profile did not support wave.) It never did fully OD and the lennies were stacked up. We pulled some of the 2-place gliders out about noon but then the winds amped up with...

Smithsburg 2morrow (Saturday Dec 17)?
A tiny tad bit of south in a predominantly westerly flow forecast for tomorrow. Anyone planning on a training hill day perhaps?

Good luck Monday. Just be aware that a P40 Extension TFR is rumored so check flight service and adjust OTB from McConnelsburg. HR will also be affected. Right now, it's scheduled to expire 1400 EDT on Monday.

Wish I had seen this sooner. Was flying out of Fairfield (sailplanes) but could have made it for an evening HR dive or even just to help out. My Falcon and/or U2 need a workout! Hoping that the activity and interest at HR increases.

Re: Pulpit Saturday February 12th
Great that you got to fly. The conditions you described were very different from what was happening at the glider port. While the average wind was moderate there were many unexpected and strong, erratic, gusts. I didn't like the gusts and was not sure about others showing up, so the glider stayed in...

Re: Woodstock Sunday October 31st
The sailplane flying at Fairfield yesterday was described as very turbulent and trashy. I watched a tow plane launching a glider get rocked at 50 ft AGL and settle down to almost touch the ground. After a couple of flights, ops were suspended due to unpleasant and useless conditions. The reports fro...

Re: Woodstock Sunday October 17th
That report linked in Eric's post was Bacil's "MASA launcher who almost made it to Front Royal." The article describes a Hang Glider pilot crashing into trees and who carried out his hang glider in pieces. The MASA pilot (Paul) on his way to Front Royal was flying the low hills off of 66 w...

Re: Pulpit MONDAY 9/6
Bacil, I didn't do a thorough evaluation of the weather that day but my SKEW-T app gives some clues for Monday. At 11:00 AM local for Hagerstown, there was a strong inversion at 3 K MSL followed by strong convection to 5K MSL. Winds at the top of the inversion were ~ 12 knots westerly rising to 30 k...

Re: Pulpit MONDAY 9/6
Bacil, Here's a data point. I had just launched my sailplane about that time. The tow was rough, the first few thermals were rough (but not crazy, but as I climbed through 4.5K MSL all hell broke loose. I was being tossed around and just along for the ride in an 800 pound aircraft with aerodynamic c...

Yah, latest wind cast puts some west back into the picture. A VIP TFR just got announced for Delaware for the weekend. P40 should exist as published (no TFR around P40) so it will most likely not affect normal airspace at the Rock.

Steve Krichten flew there about a month ago. Said that we are welcome in the LZ.
Forecast has it swinging more north than previously predicted though. No TFR announced yet.

High Rock Friday?
Not to take away from the Sac thread but High Rock takes a NNW pretty well. Looks low on the wind velocity right now but looking for an evening flight; perhaps Magic will set up (teaser)? Any interest? Need critical mass for launch crews and (short) retrieves.

If you look on a Sectional you'll see that there is a VFR Military Training Route (VR708) that goes pretty much right over launch. They can deviate from the route by I believe 4 miles (+/- 4 miles). You might be seeing smoke mixed in with those clouds. Flew on Saturday a couple of hours and the smoke was thick obscuring any semblance of a distinct horizon. Rather disorienting! Need a good cold front to clear it out which should happen mid-week.
