Re: Weather/micrometeorology Woodstock question

Other factors could be the cloud size, cloud height, and angle of the sun. At the west facing Woodstock launch in the afternoon, the cloud shadow would pass over launch before the cloud. That shade would cool the surface, causing, if not catabatic flow, at least some temporary dampening of the preva...

Re: Pulpit Saturday 11/12

It was such a nice day at the Pulpit yesterday. Checked my logbook... It was my first flight there since 2007. Great to be back! Bacil, Tom M., Mark, Charlie, Anthony, Don on hang gliders. Tom C., Randy, Rick and myself on paragliders. (Is that everyone?) All stayed up in abundant late-season lift.

Forecasted to be a good PG day at the Pulpit. A number of PGs plan to head to Dickey Ridge where it will be light.

Busted Kiting in Rockville

I was looking at topo+satellite overlay on Google Maps for a decent place to kite near home and I see a couple of paragliders layed out. Looks like the satellite image is from 4/11/2015: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.0873964,-77.1294192,110m/data=!3m1!1e3 Btw, any recommendations for a kiting spot...

Re: Club donation to USHPA

I understand that the RRG may be the only way to address the immediate insurance crisis, but my concern is that the RRG won’t be able to break even, let alone run a profit as USHPA says it hopes to, when it is insuring a risk that no real for-profit insurance company is willing to cover for any prem...

Re: Sad News from Ridgely

One morning, about eight years ago, I was walking somewhere from my home in Brooklyn. Turning a corner I saw a guy I’ve never met before load a hang glider on his car. (How often does that happen?) Me: Judging by the clean glider bag, it’s a brand new Will’s Wing. Him: Just a few flights on it. Do y...

Paragliding Worlds on Good Morning America

A Brooklyn pilot, Niels Dachler, produced a segment on 2009 Pargliding Worlds for ABC which aired last weekend on Good Morning America. It's nice to see a story on network tv that portrays free flying in a positive light.

Florida comp/xc clinic May 3rd-8th

Hey Everyone! Once again David Prentice is running an xc event in the flatlands of Florida. The format is a comp/xc clinic geared towards pilots of all skill levels. I went last year, had many good flights and learned a ton. The Florida flats flying this time of the year is unbelievable. Last year I...

Re: Valle?

Valle is a paragliding destination that definitely has its worth. This year is unusual in that the Worlds are going through the first week of February and, as Hugh said, it'll be chaos at the main launch. On the other hand, the dry season started extra early this time and, as I understand it, by lat...

Re: SIV in Florida

I haven't flown anything else besides that glider, but I am liking them too! :)

Chute didn't really get wet but I repacked it anyway just to make sure. It's been a year since I had it out anyways and now I know how to pack better.

Re: SIV in Florida

There was a payout winch on a boat with 4000 ft of line. Depending on the wind direction and strength the boat usually made a wide U-turn to get the pilot in good position over the lake. The turn initially felt weird because the pilot had to stay wide to the outside of the turn, as opposed to behind...

Re: SIV in Florida

Cool! It's a Tequila. The original, not Tequila2. Not many Skywalks in US. There is a guy up in North East that flies the old Cayenne, the one without jet flaps. Other than that I haven't seen any around.

SIV in Florida

Last weekend I did an SIV clinic with David Prentice in Florida. The primary purpose of it is making you a safer pilot, but there is also a pleasant side effect of adrenaline. Here are some of the videos: B-line stall and asymmetcis: http://vimeo.com/2227910 Full stall, frontal: http://vimeo.com/221...

FYI --- David Prentice is running a couple of SIV clinics and a friendly comp in Florida this November. The dates for the SIVs are Nov 7-9 and Nov 21-23. The meet is Nov 10-15, it's a team-based format and is geared at improving XC and thermalling skills. The closest airport it Ft Myers, but I am fl...

Another site in PA, Firetower, is endangered by a proposed wind farm: http://www.newage-examiner.com/site/new ... 0505&rfi=6

And, I hear that yet another site in upstate NY, Utz, is already closed to make way for wind mills.

Unbelievable day at Brace in Millerton, NY

When was the last time you saw 34 (yes, THIRTY-FOUR) paragliders and one hang glider in the air at the same time on the East Coast? 40+ PGs total throughout the day. It was my first time at this 1600 foot site on a beautiful ridge. The flying itself was solid but not epic, you could stay up pretty m...

Tater Hill Open in North Carolina - July 27-Aug 2

I am leaning towards driving down to a meet in Boone, NC. It's a low key sort of thing with low performance HGs flying with PGs, same tasks, same scoring. Info at http://www.flytaterhill.com/ If anyone is interested let me know. If you've never been there, Tater Hill has an impeccable, top-landable,...
