Was a real pleasure meeting / flying with Ward, Greg, and Juan today!

Side note -> Really liked that Greg and Ward had an audible pre-flight checklist, and were super conscientious / have first aid kits in the car, etc. I'm going to start doing the same from now on. (saying aloud - 'I am hooked in', 'I have done my hang check', 'my nosecone is attached', etc)

Very smooth day, winds weren't too strong aloft, and some 400+ fpm thermals were sprinkled in with the mild ridge lift. Really enjoyed the maiden voyage of my Sport 2. I maxxed out @ about 3500 MSL

Very good day! Not legendary but it was pretty close (BTW, nice video Knut). As John already mentioned, conditions were close to being ideal for a day just three days out from the winter solstice with solid ridge lift, good thermals to ~2K above launch and maybe just a whiff of wave action. Juan Sonen helped with launch and retrieval! For those who haven’t met Juan, he’s a H5 pilot that flew in this area for many years and is now getting back into the sport. Juan, thanks for your help yesterday and returning to this great adventure!

Here are a series of images highlighting the LZ across the street from the Bridge field. The year round grass field is owned by Bill Grillo and John’s last image shows most of it. Several HG pilots have landed there but many have not (yesterday was my first). From above, the impression is that it’s small relative to what’s across the street but when you consider that there are no high obstacles at its down wind edge (just a 4 ft fence) and, if you come in to high there is plenty of room to glide on either side of the center tree island it’s a great secondary LZ. When the Bridge field and flanking fields are “in crop” it’s most likely now our closest reliable field from takeoff. The first image shows the downwind edge (the fence line) and the power line that cuts across the flanking field. If you make your crosswind/final approach turn between the power line and the fence, there is plenty of room to adjust your final glide. The second and third images highlight the options for extended glides on either side of the center tree stand and the fourth image – it’s wheel friendly!
