Hyner 4th
Believe it or not I am considering a Hyner sojourn next week. Been a few years, so I was Google-mapping to remind myself of the route. Flipped over to the Earth view at destination. Wadda ya know!

Mapping has become scary-high resolution. I can almost look in the windows of my apartment in apple maps...and I thought the 7th floor gave me some privacy!

Re: Hyner 4th
July 4 is one of the really good Hyners, fireworks, swimming in the river, campfires, and of course flying. We have Hyner (SW-NW, HG and PG) plus a bunch of other sites within about an hour.
I'll be headed up on Thursday!

Re: Hyner 4th
Arrived on Thursday afternoon with some storms and there may have been a morning flight or two. Friday was windy and cross. Saturday was the a good day and I did a PG soaring flight for 20 min, then a 12 min hg soaring flight on Falcon 3-170, followed by 2+ hours on my U2 getting to 3000 above. Lots of pilots there on Saturday with a fair bit of soaring depending on your timing. A few people did some no wind sleds on Sunday when the cross calmed for a launch. Left around 11:30 to head home so there may have been more flying later. Nice weather and temps for the July 4th weekend!

While there was no flying on Friday the 4th, Saturday and Sunday allowed for multiple flights.

Re: Hyner 4th
Arrived late Friday afternoon and was greeted by the usual friendly and enthusiastic "campers" and other fellow scoundrels. Great fireworks and comradery. I retired early and enjoyed a beautiful starry night in a dark velvet sky. Left my tent fly off so I could watch the sky. It was stunning. Temps went to 50F or below. Had every spare piece of clothing on to stay warm. Did not have a lot of time to fly on Saturday (had to be home by 6) so tried to make the best of it. I will let the short video tell the story. It may surprize you.

I still can't edit my own posting as per my "permissions" so here is the corrected link to the video.

For me, there are only a few things in this sport that can top the thrill of a low save.
Thanks for posting yours!

Oh, yeah, I also flew, once each on Saturday and Sunday. Nothing spectacular, but I made it back into the mountains after a long dry spell. Beautiful night sky, great fireworks, clear days. And BVH invented a new evening entertainment. Naming rights are still open, but I am calling it Fire Crackin'!

Charly, thanks for sharing! Awesome flight. A low save might just be the best feeling in HG
Felix.
Re: Hyner 4th
Sorry for the trouble with embedding video links. The basic procedure is to find the identifier ofyour vid at YouTube or vimeo, usually a number, or an alphanumeric string of numbers and letters, enter that identifier in your post, double click to highlight the identifier, and then click the YouTube/Vimeo button.
Keep meaning to put together a tutorial, but you know how it goes....
Cragin, not sure about "youtu.be", probably won't work with that site.

Gack! The forum's YouTube button might know about this domain chicanery.... Or it might not, sorry, can't say for sure.

Re: Hyner 4th
Cragin,
Nice video and music especially. I'm curious about your approaches into the Hyner LZ. Why did you stage out over the river/bridge area? From the video you look a little low to me on the altitude side of things. Thanks in advance. Bacil

Approach direction was based on wind direction on a light and switchy day, with some south in the wind direction. Yes, normally Hyner should be approached from the south on a typical NW launch day. On one of my flights the wind was SW light, and I used a no-wind launch run during a lull, as did the pilot who launched just before me.
As far as approach altitude, yes, I was a bit lower than I should have been. Scolded myself privately, and got a reminder from John M afterwards, also. Mea culpa.
