NW winds this weekend
Fingers crossed, knock on wood, we might have a dry mountain-flyable weekend coming up. I'm in for either Sat or Sun.

Re: NW winds this weekend
On Tuesday I went and mowed Kirshners and then stopped by the primary at the Pulpit to check it out. The upper field has been hayed and is open for landing also there is a fair size strip that runs westerly along the south side of the LZ and the break down area by the road are open.

Now looks NNW on Sunday. SAC anyone? HR anyone? Bacil

Watching this thread - hope to fly my Falcon in nice conditions - mostly recovered from shoulder surgery in March; flew Ridgely last month - but will likely land on wheels - not confident of strong flare. Woodstock climb not possible but if Pulpit or High Rock look friendly ...

Add me to the waiting/watching/hoping list! Seems like forever since we last had a good mtn day...

I'm leaning toward Woodstock for Sunday. Looks pretty strong at High Rock/Pulpit for those of us flying Falcons.
Valerie, I and others I'm sure would be happy to help carry your glider if needed.

Re: NW winds this weekend
Thanks, Jesse - I'd definitely need help at Woodstock. However, nostepper's NAM model is showing me pretty reasonable winds from 11am through 5pm at Pulpit on Sunday, all the way up to 4800ft, whereas woodstock is showing straight north during that time frame, not NW. What source are you using that is showing you too high? Or has it backed off since last night?
Of course Pulpit can blow higher than forecasts ... and things can change ... so will continue to watch and see where most are headed as we get closer.

Valerie,
In my experience, heading to the Pulpit with a Falcon on a day forecasted for 10-15mph after 11am turns into a gamble of either trying to launch by 9-10am and land early or waiting for a late day flight.
Woodstock is looking good on Wunderground and NOAA. A little North cross perhaps, but not too bad.
My 2 cents...

I'm also thinking Woodstock for Sunday, at least based on today's casts.... Maybe another fly-to-the-vineyard day!

I will be at Woodstock around 12.
Re: NW winds this weekend
I'm planning on a 9am ETA. I haven't flown in a while and might try for a couple flights starting with an early one in calm air before the heat of the day.

Hi Jesse or Dan. I would like to come down and fly WS for the first time. Could you guys please give me a good site intro and/or observe if conditions are suitable?

Marshall and Crestline Calif have been great all week, all month for that matter. I got 2 1/2 hours in active air yesterday and 1 1/2 hours in too d..n active air last week. I just had to post to pull Dan Tuck's chain.
Good luck to all today. As reliable as the conditions are here in So. Calif, the scenery is no match for Woodstock.

Re: NW winds this weekend
I had a nice flight and didn't want to leave the many pilots still flying / planning to fly without the windsock (and sturdy pole) I had in the PLZ. Jesse indicated that he or someone flying later will retrieve it at the end of the day. I am hoping it is someone who(like him) lives close-in in the NoVa suburbs. Whoever end with it, plz PM me here or text me at seven-oh-3 five76 two nine 60 so I can figure out how to pick up / meet. Thks!

Re: NW winds this weekend
Mucho many hg pilots at Woodstock today.Launched at 2:53 pm and boated around, up and down the ridge for approximately 1 hour. There was strong up and strong down, especially early in the flight. Going "going over the falls" can be quite exciting. Landed close to route 11, just south of Sheetz. I tried to follow a cloud street out over the valley and it dried up. There were many nice cloud streets. My max was 2800 agl. I know others got higher. A pilot in a green glider passed me, heading south, crossing the gap at Edinberg. Who was that and how far did you get?

Super day at Woodstock. 16 hg and later 3 pg at the end of the day soared! Got pretty high several times and flew out past 81 and cored sink to get down to land after 2:40 of air time. Great to see so many enjoy.

Super fun day at Woodstock-- seemed like the old days with so many pilots out there.
I got 3+ hours and 5600 over launch (7500msl). Flew up to Strasburg and back-- flew out past Route 11 and almost to 81. Lots of great thermals and, damn, it was really cold up there! Karen got 1:15 and 2700 over launch.

Many thanks to all who assisted, guided, suggested and encouraged for my first flight at Woodstock (and first slot launch). It was great to meet so many pilots and to have a great flight - got to 6200 MSL, got very cold, fantastic!
